Why We Use Sit-Inside Kayaks at Lake Powell - Comfort, Stability, and Confidence

If you’ve ever rented a kayak before, you’ve probably noticed two main styles: sit-on-top and sit-inside. While both have their uses, Paddle Express proudly chooses sit-inside touring kayaks for all our Lake Powell adventures; and there’s a good reason why.

Sit-On-Top vs. Sit-Inside: What’s the Difference?

A sit-on-top kayak looks like an open board with a molded seat on top. These are often used for rentals at beaches and calm bays because they’re easy to get in and out of. However, they also come with trade-offs - you sit higher up, which raises your center of gravity and makes you more likely to tip over in wind or waves.

A sit-inside kayak, on the other hand, places you inside the hull with your legs tucked under the deck. That lower seating position provides better balance and smoother paddling. It also keeps you much drier and warmer, especially in cooler seasons or early mornings.

Why We Choose Sit-Insides at Paddle Express

Lake Powell isn’t just a lake; it’s a vast, open body of water surrounded by cliffs that can funnel the wind like a canyon tunnel. We choose sit-inside kayaks because they handle that environment better. They’re more stable, efficient, and easier to control in all conditions.

We also prioritize comfort and endurance. Our tours are designed to be immersive - around 5 miles round trip of paddling into Antelope Canyon followed by a 1–3 mile hike through its glowing walls. A sit-inside kayak supports your back, keeps your legs comfortable, and gives you the freedom to enjoy the journey without fatigue or fear of tipping.

Safety First, Always

Our number one priority has always been safety. We’ve guided thousands of guests; from total beginners to seasoned paddlers, and have maintained an excellent safety record throughout the years. We provide fitted life vests, proper paddle instruction, and our guides are trained in both rescue and first aid.

In short, sit-inside kayaks aren’t just our preference - they’re part of what makes the Paddle Express experience smoother, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone.

When you paddle with us, you’re not just riding the water. You’re gliding through a story - one carved by wind, time, and care.
